The Murals at West Hills Hospital

It is with great pride that I have been selected to do the murals for West Hills Hospital which is a mental health care center.

The first mural poject is the cafeteria, which was named by the employees, 'the West Side Cafe`'.

I was asked to do the entire theme, from choosing the color scheme, to deciding on what to put on the walls and where. For most of the accents we used acrylics, however on the landscaped murals we used oils over acrylics.

We chose bright, cheery warm colors that were condusive to stimulating the appetite. I wanted the cafeteria to not feel institutional, but instead have the feel of a country cafe.

"The Devil is in the details..."

Since it is a mental health enviroment, we aren't able to decorate with a lot of physical items, like shelves, vases, plates, etc... so I created some Tromp L`oeil effects. There are shelves, plate racks, hanging chillies, ropes of garlic and even a slightly crooked sign...

Here are a few of the finished Murals, it continues to be a work in progress...
